Alderson or Byrnes- Who is Your Pick?

Alderson or Byrnes- Who is Your Pick?

The Mets interviewed Josh Byrnes yesterday and Sandy Alderson will get another shot at an interview today. Since it looks like all other candidates are either not available or not what the Mets want, these two men seem to be the guys who will battle it out for the Mets General Manager position.

The question now becomes who is the better guy? Both are established men in the baseball office but the Mets according to inside sources are leaning towards Alderson and rightfully so. Alderson has a pretty impressive resume in regards to baseball and the operations of teams. My only concern ( it is probably a silly one ) is remember when Art Howe came over to become the Manager of the Mets from the Athletics where he was pretty successful and we all know how that worked out. All kidding aside, Alderson should do just fine and as mentioned before has the knowledge and has been around long enough to help the team. In his time in Oakland the team was pretty successful winning four division titles, three pennants and the 1989 World Series.

As far as Josh Byrnes, he has been somewhat succesful but if you are looking for someone with more experience, Alderson is your guy. That is not a knock to Byrnes, it is just the fact he is only about 41 years old he has not had the chance to have as much experience within baseball. The other factor that disturbs me is how his reign in Arizona was sort of tainted by ownership. Josh Byrnes did not want to resign Eric Byrnes yet ownership went behind his back and made the deal anyway. Players like Carlos Quentin were traded away during Byrnes’ tenure and again it was not clear if that was solely his decision. The Mets need someone who will take control and although I believe Byrnes is capable and is smart given his past record with the Diamondbacks, I am not sure if the Mets need a GM who possibly could be overturned. The Mets have shown they are in need of someone who will be in charge of making decisions. I am not sure Byrnes is the guy.

I do not think I am the only one to feel this way regarding the Mets new GM and if all of sources I have spoken to are right Sandy Alderson will be announced as the Mets new General Manager by the end of the week.
